A children's story in rhyme, which tells how a little girl's courage and kindness, saves Christmas for the animals in the "Great Woods".

Emma visits her grandparents the day before Christmas. She ventures into the "Great Woods" with Grandma's Old English sheepdog, Chaucer. Emma notices all the animals have locks on the doors to their houses. The animals tell Emma they are afraid of the Wild Boar who lives in the woods. The Wild Boar appears and chases Emma and Chaucer. Just as they are about to escape Emma stops and offers the Boar some chocolate. The Boar likes Emma and the chocolate and becomes gentle and celebrates Christmas with all the animals in the woods.

All of the characters in the book are real members of Emma's family. Chaucer was the most recent sheepdog owned by the family, Uncle Adam has written Emma the song referred to in the book, and Grandma lives in the house surrounded by "The Great Woods"

In the first two books of Walter C. Kilgus, “Emma and the Wild Boar” and “Bess Takes a Ride”, his granddaughters Emma and Bess each had an exciting adventure in the Great Woods. In The Dark Side of the Woods, Emma and Bess will have a different adventure, listening to their grandfather telling them the story of the Great Woods’ beginning.

In this third book in the Great Woods Book series, readers will find Emma and Bess listening to their grandfather telling them the story about how the Great Woods, which was once divided into two parts, became one. Emma and Bess learn from their grandfather how their mother, Amy, and their Uncle Adam entered the Dark Side of the Woods to rescue their friend, Robbie Rabbit who had been captured by wolves. The story tells how they made their escape, how all of the animals fought bravely together to defeat the powers of the Dark Side of the Woods, and how after they were victorious the Great Woods came to be one. More adventures await readers as the whole story unfolds in The Dark Side of the Woods.

Again, this book is enhanced by the wonderful illustrations of Craig Howarth, whose creative work captured the imagination of the readers in the first two books. Readers are also encouraged to get a copy of the author author’s “Emma and the Wild Boar” and “Bess Takes a Ride.”
